Loggers outpace visiting Trojans
The Libby Loggers snagged a 10-point win at home against the Troy Trojans Tuesday, Dec. 22, winning the contest 50-40.
The Loggers had difficulty scoring in the first period, and the Trojans took advantage, securing a 16-9 lead as the first quarter came to a close.
In the second quarter, the Loggers started to gain ground, outscoring the Trojans 13-5 to take a one-point lead into the locker room at the half.
The Loggers’ lead became more decisive during the third quarter as they scored 15 points to Troy’s seven. The third ended with Libby in the lead, 37-28.
Both teams played more aggressively in the fourth quarter, but the Trojans couldn’t erase the deficit. As the clock expired, the Loggers held on to the lead and won, 50-40.
Libby’s Erik Lauer led all scorers. He hit seven of 11 from the field and five of seven from the line, contributing 19 points to Libby’s win.
The other big scorers for Libby were Ryggs Johnston and Anthony Johnson. Johnston scored four of the shots he took but also managed to make three of his six taken three-point shots. In addition, Johnston missed only one free throw and made five.
Johnson hit three of his eight attempts from the field. He also had one free throw and one three-point shot, attempt, but didn’t make either one. Johnston gave the Loggers 16 points while Johnson added six.
Sean Opland led the Trojans before fouling out of the game, hitting three of six from the field, and two of his five attempted free throws, making him the only one on his team to score more than one free throw. He scored eight points for the Trojans.
Kolton Winebark made two of his six attempted baskets and one of his two free throws. Winebark also made one for one on his three-point shots. In total, Winebark earned six points for Troy.
Adam Tallmadge also made two out of six baskets and one of two free throws, racking up five points for the Trojans.
The Loggers next face the Bonners Ferry Badgers on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 4 p.m. in the Ralph Tate Memorial Gymnasium. The Trojans also next play at home, hosting the Bluehawks of Thompson Falls at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2.
