Troy celebrates 100 years as a city in September
The City of Troy will be celebrating its 100th birthday in September. Miners settled in the area in 1886, and the people voted to incorporate the town in July of 1915. Mayor H.D. Whiting held the first city council meeting in September of 1915.
Troy will be celebrating its centennial year with a three-day town celebration that will start Friday, Sept. 11, and come to an end Sunday, Sept. 13.
The festivities will start with an opening ceremony that will take place at 3 p.m. at the Troy museum. The museum has received minor upgrades recently. The caboose recently received new decals and the Mossey family from Troy donated yard decoration flamingos.
“The Mossey family donated flamingos,” Darren Coldwell, the mayor of Troy said. “It’s a tourist attraction. They look great and people stop and take pictures by them. It was quite popular on Facebook. The pictures of the flamingos received 175 likes, 32 shares and quite a few comments.”
Coldwell will be kicking off the centennial celebration by saying a few words at the opening ceremony.
“The opening ceremony will be at 3 p.m. in front of the Troy museum,” Jeni Evans, the coordinator for the event, said. “The mayor will be saying a few words and raising a flag from the capitol that the governor sent to us.”
After the raising of the flag there will be a farmers market and an apple pie contest. There will be live music and a bouncy house.
“At the kickoff ceremony there will be a big farmers market,” she said. “There will also be an apple festival that will feature an apple pie contest.”
During the opening ceremony the Lincoln Theatre will be showing the Wizard of Oz at 2 p.m. and a western at 7 p.m. There will be snacks and beverages offered at old time prices.
Following the opening ceremony there will be an opening night centennial celebration at the Silver Spur from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
“Friday night there is going to be a banquet and free live music at the Silver Spur,” she said. “The music will go into the night.”
The Troy Trojans football team has a home game Friday night against Deer Lodge and the game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
