Local church providing community service

The Libby Assembly of God church is giving back to the community this summer.

“Each month throughout the summer we are going to take on a project that would help the city out,” Kevin Lindgren, the lead pastor for the church said. “ We are calling it our make a difference night.”

On June 24, members of the church got together to paint parts of Fireman’s Park.

“It was an all church project,” Lindgren said. “We had 78 people from the church show up and help. It was a great day. It took about two hours.”

The cemetery in Libby was the focus for the groups project in July.

“On July 22, we did some touch up on our painting from June,” Lindgren said. “Then we worked in a section of the cemetery to cut the sod back along the headstones. That time around we didn’t have as big of a group, but we still got a lot done.”

Lindgren said that this is the church’s way to give back to the community.

“We are doing it because we love Libby,” he said. “We want to be part of what’s going on here. We do it because we love Libby and we want to serve our community. We are apart of this place. One of the big challenges of being in a church is that people perceive the church as all about taking from the community, this is a way to give back to the community.”

Lindgren said the mission is to serve the community by volunteering their time.

“We purpose in our heart to serve our community,” he said. “We asked the city planner what jobs they had that they weren’t going to be able to get to. We love Libby and we want to serve our community.”

The next project is scheduled to take place on August 26, but Lindgren is unsure of what project the city will give the church.

“August 26 is the next scheduled project,” he said. “I’m not sure what the project will be. We are still discussing that with the city. It will likely be more cemetery work. That’s a big project. It will likely be a big group effort to finish it all. Whichever project the city wants to give us we will gladly take it on and complete it. It’s our way of giving back to the community that we serve.”
