Loggers, Trojans, Lions compete in Libby

Five schools arrived at the Libby High School track on an exceptionally beautiful day on Saturday to compete in the Libby Invitational. The Eureka boys and the Libby girls finished the day as the top performing teams.

“The weather is warming up and the kids are too,” said Libby head coach Jim May.

With the Loggers at the halfway point for their season, May said the picture is getting clearer for how the team stacks up in the division. 

“I think the kids are progressing at a good pace,” he said. “We have a clear picture of where we stand in each event versus the competition from the Northwest A schools.” 

Luke Adamson and Collin Johnson have consistently performed well on the track, earning the team valuable points once again on Saturday. “Luke Adamson is right in the middle of the boys’ sprint and Pole Vault performances and Collin Johnson has moved up the deep list in the 800 meter run,” May said.

In the field events, Michael Curtiss has marks near the top of the conference in shot put and discus, although his shot put on Saturday was not as strong as it had been.

May was also pleased with the times both boys’ relay teams ran on Saturday.

The Lady Loggers were led to the team victory with first place finishes by Asia Jones, Krysten Mossburg, Shyla Stevenson, Shelbie McLinden and Trinity Wallace.

The Logger girls’ 1600-meter relay team ran an impressive race, comfortably winning by 17 seconds. “The Mossburg and Stevenson girls ran three seconds faster than our 1600-meter relay team ran at state last year,” said May.

On the other end of the finish spectrum, the boys’ 100-meter race came down to a photo finish with Troy’s Sean Opland winning by the slimmest of margins. Opland has battled Eureka’s Christian Langston several times this year and earned his first victory over him in the 100 meters on Saturday. Libby’s Luke Adamson was also neck-and-neck at the finish line. 

Opland earned a victory in the 200-meter dash, picking up speed after turning the corner and cruising to a comfortable win. Opland also won the high jump and took second in the triple jump.

Troy head coach Neal Newton said the team’s athletes continue to improve. “They did pretty well over all. A lot of personal bests out there, which you kind of expect that as the weather starts to warm up,” he said.

“It was real fun at the end of the meet to watch Pate and Sean go at it in the high jump. They both jumped really well and increased their personal bests for the season,” Newton said.

Newton said getting to compete in some nice weather is important for the athletes for future meets. 

“It seems like a lot of times we have cold weather all through the season and post-season comes and you get those meets where its in the mid-80s and it really takes it out of the kids.” 

In the long jump, Trojan Pate Scott had trouble finding his mark, but when he did his jumps were good enough to earn him the win. In both the preliminary round and the finals, Scott scratched both of his first two jumps, which forced him into a do-or-die jump on the last attempt. 

Allie Coldwell took third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump and Olivia Roach took third in the shot put and fifth in the 200-meter dash for the Lady Trojans.

The Trojans expect to have a few more athletes join the team this week as they put in a solid five days of practice before traveling to Whitefish for an invitational track meet on Saturday.

The Loggers will also make the trip to Whitefish on Saturday.
