Libby soccer struggles with Whitefish, boys beat CFalls

| September 23, 2014 12:38 PM

The Libby Loggers (2-4, 1-2) lost 4-0 at home Saturday to conference rival Whitefish. The Loggers allowed three goals on set pieces and could not convert any of their seven shots on net.

“It seemed after the first two Whitefish goals that we began to press a little too hard and the frustration of not being able to find the back of the net began to build,” Libby Coach Charlie Webster said.

The game was not as lopsided as the score indicates. Whitefish had 11 shots on goal and the difference was execution. Webster said the Bulldogs simply seem to have his team’s number.

The Loggers travel Saturday to Polson for a 2 p.m. kickoff.

Libby 3, Columbia Falls 1

The Loggers earned a conference road victory Thursday against the Wildcats. Sage Friss’ goal in the 12th minute put the Loggers ahead early. Chance Moody assisted the score.

An own goal tied the match in the 20th minute, but Cody Wood’s unassisted effort in the 28th minute put Libby ahead for good. Wood added an assist midway through the second half when foreign exchange student Walter Briones slotted home an insurance strike.

Webster praised his team’s mental toughness for overcoming the own goal. Libby controlled the game handily, recording 13 shots on goal to Columbia Falls’ one.

Whitefish 5, Libby 0

The Libby Lady Loggers (0-5, 0-2)  lost at home Saturday to Whitefish.

Outside of a 15-minute stretch during which Whitefish scored five goals, Libby played evenly with their opponent.

Haley Nicolson broke a scoreless tie in the 16th minute. She went on to score three more goals between the 22nd and 30th minute.

Libby put five shots on net and Lady Logger goalkeeper Abby Ennenga recorded four saves.

The Lady Loggers travel Saturday to Polson for a noon kickoff.

Columbia Falls 4, Libby 0

The scoreline may not have been in her favor, but Libby keeper Abby Ennenga was the player of the game during Thursday’s contest in Columbia Falls. The Wildkats outshot Libby 27-3, but Ennenga did her best to keep Libby in the game with 18 saves. Only three Wildkat shots eluded her reach; the fourth goal was an own goal.
