Five Troy Trojans qualified for the state track and field tournament during the Western B Divisional at Missoula County Stadium.

Sean Opland led the pack, qualifying in four events Friday and Saturday. Opland edged Thompson Falls freshman McKenzie Holt by .01 seconds in the 100-meter dash. At last weekend’s district meet, Holt beat Opland by 0.11 seconds. Neither young man ran their best time, but Opland will hold bragging rights heading into Friday’s state tournament in Butte.

Opland also won the 400-meter dash and claimed second in the high jump. Junior Michael Miller’s 51.97 made it a 1-2 finish for Troy. Senior Nathan Olds claimed first in the triple jump and third in the high jump. Fellow senior Gabe Hickman took third in both the javelin and long jump. Junior Pate Scott claimed second in the long jump, and Opland and Miller took second and fifth, respectively, in the 200-meter dash.

“It was probably what we expected,” Troy Coach Neil Newton said. “State is when it really counts. I know Pate wanted to do better than he did, but at this point it is survive and advance. I’m looking for Nathan to get past that 42-feet mark at state to place. He can do it.”

Troy’s 1,600-meter relay qualified for a state run with a fifth-place finish. The 400-meter relay dropped their state hopes when the team botched its second baton exchange.

“We’ve had some guys really coming along,” Newton said. “Michael Miller is turning it up, pushing Sean in the 400. It’s been a fun season and this group of kids has been a real pleasure to coach.”
