Trojan tennis bounces toward state tourney
It was a standout weekend for Troy tennis.
Senior Trojan tennis duo Luke Haggerty and Bruce Metz took second in the top doubles division Saturday at the Loyola Invitational. Haggerty and Metz came from behind in the semifinal to beat a Cut Bank squad, 1-6, 7-6, 10-5. The Trojans met Loyola’s top squad in the final, losing 6-3, 6-0.
Also at Loyola, Troy’s Alex Day advanced to the semifinals before falling, 6-0, 6-1.
On the girls’ side, Troy’s Megan Hight and Taylor Brown advanced to the semifinals of the No. 2 doubles competition. The girls battled Fort Benton’s Serenity Juderman and Lexi Giles before falling, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Assistant Coach Steve Prieve was pleased.
“They are pretty scrappy and fairly athletic, which really helps a lot,” Prieve said. “Being first-year players they are rough around the edges, but they are good players and good kids.”
Troy’s girls will head to Ronan for the two-day divisional tournament beginning Friday. Prieve said all of Troy’s boys, as well as the qualifying girls, will head to the state tournament the following weekend.
