Records fall at countywide meet

Troy’s boys and Eureka’s girls claimed team victories Tuesday at the Lincoln County track meet. Libby’s Shyla Stevenson and teammate Marlena Urvater each won three events, as did Troy’s Sean Opland.

Stevenson swept the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races, and proved the bane of Eureka runner Ida Skjevold’s existence. Stevenson edged Skjevold by 0.1 seconds in the 100 and by 0.3 seconds in the 200.

“We haven’t had a runner win three spring races at a meet in a long time around here,” Libby Coach Jim May said. “Shyla keeps dropping her times and scoring points for the Lady Loggers.”

Urvater, a freshman, dominated the leaping contests, winning the long jump, high jump and triple jump.

“She’s ready to really break out in both the triple and long jumps,” May said.

Tuesday’s meet also marked the return of Libby’s Hailey Craig, who finished second in the 1,600-meter race and third in the 3,200. Craig suffered a knee injury during volleyball season that kept her sidelined.

Libby’s Asia Jones also had a strong day, winning the pole vault and javelin. She also finished fourth in the discus.

Eureka’s Emily Billow turned heads when she broke her school’s record in the shot put with a heave of 40 feet, 8.5 inches. Her throw was the longest in the state this season.

On the boys end, Opland had a standard meet by his standards, winning the 100 and 200 as well as the high jump. For the second consecutive meet, fellow Trojan Pate Scott narrowly beat teammate Gabe Hickman in the long jump, this time by less than one inch (20-4.25 to 20-3.5).

Libby’s Patrick Keogh took third in the pole vault with a mark of 10 feet, all the more impressive considering this is his first year competing in the event.

Saturday sends Libby to Kalispell for the Archie Roe Invitational and Troy to Missoula for the Seeley Invitational.
