Busy weekend for area tennis

Libby Coach Kyle Hannah saw plenty to be excited about during Libby’s home tennis meet Friday.

Doubles partners and cousins Jason Schnackenburg and Cody Wood beat a Bigfork duo that claimed sixth at last year’s state tournament. Despite the 6-4, 6-4 score, Hannah said the match was easily won.

“It wasn’t as close as you might think,” Hannah said. “They were up 5-2 in second set. They handled that match pretty well. They are getting to the point where they know how to correct things on their own. It is very nice having Jason for Cody. Jason is like another coach out there. He knows what I am going to say and coaches Cody through the match.”

Hannah also mentioned sophomore Kaylene Hudson’s improving game.

“She’s staying in matches to find her rhythm,” Hannah said. “She gets down in matches, but battles back. She’s done that twice in a row and is getting that winning bug.”

Bigfork was busy Friday. They also traveled to Troy.

In Troy, the Trojan boys, like their Libby counterparts, beat their Bigfork foes. The Lady Trojans, like the Lady Loggers, fell 4-2.

Senior duo Bruce Metz and Luke Haggerty won No. 1 doubles and Michael Goe continued to improve on a strong season when he beat Kyle Thomson 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match. The Metz/Haggerty combination won again Saturday when Troy hosted Valley Christian. While Goe dropped a rare singles match, No. 2 singles player Dominic Chiaverini made it two straight 6-0, 6-0 matches when he dominated Andrew Hawkins.

Libby travels Tuesday to Bigfork while Troy’s boys will host Clark Fork.
