Roy Sather, 83, of Libby

Roy “Sam” Sather, 83, of Libby passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center.  

He was born Nov. 3, 1931, in Somers to Samuel and Anna (Anderson) Sather.  He grew up in Somers and attended Flathead High School, graduating with the Class of 1950.  

In 1951, Roy entered the U.S. Air Force and served from 1951 to 1955. He served his country during the Korean War and then two years in Okinawa. In August 1954, he married Donna Gompf in Libby. They enjoyed 59 wonderful years together. Roy worked as a quality-control supervisor for J. Neils and Champion lumber companies. He was a 51-year member of the American Legion.

He also served a time on the Libby City Council and was a member of the Senior Citizens Center. After 17 years of running bingo, many around town recognize Roy as the “caller” for bingo games at the Senior Citizens Center and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Elmer and Alfred; and his sister, Grace.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Donna Sather of Libby; children, Yvonne Hencley of Helena; Kevin (Mary) Sather of Viroqua, Wis., and Debra Sather of Palm Springs, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Ryan, Amanda, Courtney, Shenna, Caylea, Chris, Samantha, Abby, and Lucas; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home, 422 W. 2nd St., in Libby.  

Visitation was Monday,  March 17, 2014.  

Arrangements are under the care of Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home.
