Biggest turnout so far at Troy folf tournament
More than 90 disc golfers and their families descended on Troy for the 9th annual Timberbeast Challenge on Saturday.
Coordinator Brian Bjortomt said this year was the biggest turnout the Troy competition had seen so far.
Great weather and an enthusiastic group of athletes from across the northwest, and some a few states farther away, made for a fine day on the course, Bjortomt said.
“It’s been pretty good,” Bjortomt said. Troy was the smallest town the competitors travelled to and it was fun to see the community support the event, he added.
Competitor Aaron Kinyon of Missoula said he enjoyed the Troy course because it was well-designed and well-maintained and didn’t have a lot of underbrush.
Winner of the open category, Nick Johnson of Tri-Cities, Wash., said he liked playing in Troy because the course was short and technical. In the last 15 years he had been competing, he had seen the sport go through a boom, with a wide variety of ages and athletic ability at each event.
Brian Cox of Washington said he has been playing for about 20 years and was drawn to frisbee golf because of the camaraderie among the players.
“The best part is that you don’t have to be Michael Jordan to play,” Cox said.
Bjortomt said Christian Dietrich, the number 14-rated player in the world, came to the competition. Dietrich had one of four aces on the day, as did Andrew Elliott, Karen Brown and Ron Pannesi.
