Harold Chew, 75, of Libby

Harold F. Chew, 75, of Libby passed away Monday, June 9, 2014, at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center.  

He was born June 10, 1938, in a small cabin at Cooperstown, Ill. to Lee and Hazel (Dargel) Chew. He grew up and attended school in San Bernardino, Calif.

Harold entered the Army in 1961 and served two years active duty, two years active reserve and two years inactive reserve. He then settled in Yorba Linda, Calif. where he worked for the Metropolitan Water District for seven years as the maintenance man.

Harold moved to Libby in July 1970. Two years later he went to work at Libby Dam as a laborer. He moved to the powerhouse where he started working as a carpenter. Harold worked on numerous dams, bridges, powerhouses, and highway construction jobs throughout the United States and Canada. He retired in Libby in 1993. Harold enjoyed fishing and having coffee at The Mint (which he considered his office) every morning.

His brothers Calvin and William preceded him in death.

Survivors include his brothers Robert (JoAnn) Chew of Fort Worth, Texas, Jay Chew of Seattle and Ray (Laurie) Chew of Libby; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services for Harold will be 1 p.m. June 14, 2014, at Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home Chapel, 422 W. 2nd St, in Libby. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.schnackenbergfh.com.
