Lady Loggers win in Whitefish; boys continue growing pains
The Libby Loggers (1-13) lost a hoops shootout Saturday in Frenchtown, 78-67.
All-State guard Jared Winslow, who recently accepted a baseball scholarship to Montana State University-Billings, led all scorers with 26 points. Collin Johnson and Michael Curtiss contributed in major ways with 15 points each, but Frenchtown simply counted more weapons. Seven Frenchtown players scored a point compared to five Loggers.
“Frenchtown is going to score a lot of points,” Libby Coach Wally Winslow said. “They are skilled offensively. We tried to slow down the pace but obviously that didn’t work very well.”
John Chapman led Frenchtown with 25 points.
“We played some diamond-and-one to slow Chapman,” Winslow said. “But we didn’t rebound well because we were not in good position. A defense like that puts people in odd spots. I thought we did great offensively. It was nice to see everyone score well. It was enjoyable that we were able to execute in a very competitive game.”
The Loggers tip at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

At Whitefish (4-2, 8-7), the Loggers struggled in a low-scoring game on Friday.
The Loggers fell behind 13-5 after the first quarter and were unable to reclaim the lead.
“Whitefish played a lot of extended 2-3 zone,” Coach Winslow said. “They got in the passing lanes a bit. The tempo was in our favor; we dictated tempo. But we gave up stuff inside early in third and that changed the game plan.”
Whitefish won the third quarter 19-10. Garrett Anderson led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Jared Winslow led all scorers with 17 points.

Frenchtown’s Vanessa Stavish fittingly led all scorers with 23 points on the night she surpassed 1,000 career points.
“First half was decent. I thought we competed well,” Libby Coach Jim May said. “We just laid an egg in the second half. We did not give ourselves many opportunities to score, so we’re still working on that.”
