Greenchain notches sixth at Classic
The Greenchain had a busy weekend with matches against Frenchtown and Browning at the Frenchtown mixer Friday. The team then went to Superior and competed in the Bob Kinsey Classic on Saturday.
On Friday, Greenchain wrestlers defeated Browning 54-24, but lost to Frenchtown 23-37.
Greenchain coach Kelly Morford said the team wrestled the best they have all season in Frenchtown. “We took a big step forward,” said Morford The team showed mental competitiveness and wrestled with sound fundamentals said the coach.
On Friday, Libby’s defending Class A state champion Gharret Chapel won by pin twice, wrestling at 182 pounds. Zach Crace, 152 pounds, won by technical fall and pin in his matches.
Morford pointed to Dylan Roby’s victory at 138 pounds on Friday as providing a big spark for the team. Down six points in the last minute, Roby scored a takedown and two near-falls to force overtime, where he secured the victory.
On Saturday, the Greenchain traveled to Superior and competed against 12 other teams at the Bob Kinsey Classic.
Zach Crace ran his streak to four at the classic. Crace captured the championship at the event every year of his high school career.
Gharett Chapel’s record stayed perfect for the weekend also, winning his weight-class at the tournament.
Morford was impressed with freshman Laine Young’s performance at the tourney. Young showed real toughness against Frenchtown’s Cody Warner. Warner placed at state last year and won the championship at 126 pound in the classic. Young proved to be a handful for the accomplished Warner.
Greenchain wrestlers had a few tough losses in matches that could have gotten them into third and fourth place tilts. Those losses cost the team chances to add to their point total.
The team came in sixth place at the tournamnent.
