The Troy girls’ basketball team dropped their home opener, 32-26, on Thursday against the Cougars of Stillwater Christian. The team was led by sophomore Allie Brown with six points on the night.

The Lady Trojans fought a hard game against Stillwater, holding a 9-9 tie after the first quarter and trailing by only one at the half.  They played an even third quarter, entering the fourth quarter trailing 24-23, but scored only three points in the final stanza compared to Stillwater’s 8.

Troy coach Justin Young was pleased with his team’s performance. “We’re a really young team, with just two seniors and one junior on varsity,” he said. “Overall, I was excited for the girls. They came out and competed right from the start.”

Young said he could see a lot of nerves in play during the opener, as shots the girls normally make in practice just didn’t fall. “I’m very confident that these shots will start falling,” he said.

Young is optimistic about the outlook for his team this season. “I’m excited to see what happens with this group. They’re a neat bunch of girls. If we keep up the work ethic they’ve had we’ll make big strides each and every week.”

The team visits Plains next week for a Friday afternoon game.
