The Libby Invitational got off to a wet start Saturday, but the weather calmed and the show carried on as Libby claimed fourth in the girls meet and neighboring Troy claimed third in the boys events.

Libby’s Shyla Stevenson placed in three events, claiming second in the 200-meter race, third in the 400-meter race and fifth in the javelin.

“Shyla’s times keep coming down,” Libby Coach Jim May said. “The relay teams’ times are well below where they were last year. We’re getting a lot of improvement from new faces.”

May mentioned sophomore Trinity Wallace, who earned fourth in long jump and fifth in triple jump, and freshman Shelbie McLinden, who earned sixth in both javelin and shot put, as impactful young members. Freshman Marlena Urvater also made her mark, claiming first in the long jump and earning fourth place in both the high jump and triple jump.

“We knew she had a chance to make an impact as a freshman,” May said of Urvater. “We saw her in middle school and knew she just loves track. She combines that with a great work ethic.”

The visiting Troy Trojans boys narrowly missed a second-place team finish, scoring 96.5 points to Eureka’s 97.5 points. Sophomore Sean Opland won the 200-meter and high jump competitions while taking second in the long jump. His 23.19 seconds in the 200-meter and 6-feet-4-inch leap in the high jump were both personal records.

Opland’s bridesmaid standing in the long jump was no loss for the Trojans as teammate Gabe Hickman beat Opland’s best leap by 2½  inches. Hickman took second in both the javelin and shot put while also taking fifth in the 100-meter sprint.

“We had a lot of personal bests,” Troy Coach Neil Newton said. “We had a couple kids entered in the JV who probably could have placed for us. But it was a good meet for us. Gabe, Sean, Nathan (Olds) and Michael Miller are doing great, and Pate Scott will be back when his hamstring gets better.”

Despite the rain, Libby’s home meet was a success, according to May.

“Thanks to everyone who helped,” May said. “Everyone who helped time and run events were a huge help. We really appreciate it because we put on great meets. Coaches from other schools complimented me on what we do. By the middle of the meet it dried out and was actually great running weather.”
