Kalispell shooter Nic Cramer led a field of 17 youth shotgun shooters and won the Western Regional Championship Scholastic Clay Target Program competition held in Libby on May 4.

Meagan Wilkinson, also from Kalispell, was the overall winning girl for the event.

The Scholastic Clays Target Program sponsors competitions for the youth shotgun organizations statewide and assists local clubs with trophies and leadership in these events.

The Montana Western Regional was the first of its kind since the SCTP program started and the Montana/Wyoming State SCTP organization was formed. The competition was held at the Libby Shooting Complex near the airport, volunteer manpower and assistance was provided by the Libby Scatterguns Committee of the Libby Rod and Gun Club.

Teams of shooting athletes competed in trap, skeet and sporting clays all vying for individual and team honors.

Libby’s own SCTP team, The Rock Crushers, did extremely well taking home several trophies and qualifying for endowment grants provided by Midway USA.

In addition to recognition for their shooting prowess, athletes also benefited from random drawings of prizes, provided through funding from the SCTP state organization, including beautiful Buck knives engraved with the SCTP logo.

Athletes also were provided an opportunity to shoot .22 rimfire pistols in a timed, controlled environment engaging steel plates at various distances. Libby Shooting Complex’s new pistol bay was setup with Scholastic Pistol Program speed steel-shooting stages challenging the athletes to shoot accurately in their best cumulative time of five tries on each of the two steel plate arrays. Qualified Range Officers from the Cabinet Rifle and Pistol Association provided safety and oversight for this demonstration.

Clay-target shooting, speed pistol-shooting, pizza, trophies and door prizes helped athletes, coaches and parents to have a full and fun day at the Libby Shooting Complex.

School-aged youth interested in joining the Libby Rock Crushers, learning to shoot trap, skeet and sporting clays, in a team environment, please contact Head Coach Tom Bailey at 293-7743.
