We need to keep watching the Lincoln County Port Authority
Letter to the Editor,
Libby residents, stop turning your heads. Look around and see what is happing here.
Recently, I noticed some illegal dumping happening at the old mill site. I contacted Paul Rumelhart, and he responded by saying he would look in to it. I contacted him again, and he commented, saying what is the big deal.
Paul Rumelhart told me he knew of a local hauler who had a driver who mistakenly dumped where he should not have. Most drivers will not drop a load unless they are told where to dump.
I say this is not the first time thay have dumped there. It’s just the first time they where caught.
I also noticed lots of dumping there of dirt, stumps, concrete, etc. Why do they allow this? At some point, we will have to pay for cleanup.
We need new business here, but who wants to move into a dump site? Maybe it is time to replace the Port Authority with someone who will do more to help Libby.
Remember, he was appointed not elected. I’m not sure how much we pay for his service, but we know he doesn’t earn his keep.
What we need is someone who will not put up with bad business practices. There are hundreds of loads of material there we can only hope have been checked for asbestos.
So, please, watch and hope this practice stops. We need future business here, not more cleanup.
Since first writing this, the one pile I found illegally dumped had been cleaned up.
We can only hope it was brought up to the dump and not dumped someplace else.
Maybe the one who is responsible for what happens there might know if it is not too much trouble for he is too busy doing nothing anyway.
Since he has been down there, tax payers have paid at least $500,000 or more for his services.
The least he could do is get out of his truck and clean up some of the garbage blowing around the area and at least straighten up the signs that say no unauthorized dumping.
I also have talked to Tony Berget about the problem down there and the newspaper. I hope thay are somewhat concerned.
