When Jared Winslow is on the mound, Libby Loggers American Legion baseball coach Kelly Morford admits he’s most relaxed.

During Tuesday night’s Logger game with the Kootenai Valley Rangers, Morford had his ace on the mound, and Winslow was already in mid-season form.

While it wasn’t a perfect game, the 17-year-old Winslow had the Rangers reeling giving up just one hit to the first batter he faced of the evening en route to a 5-0 Logger victory.

After that leadoff hit to C.J. Harris, the hard-throwing Winslow garnered 17 of the 21 putouts via the strikeout, leaving only four other outs for his teammates to garner on the field.

“It’s hard to not take it for granted that he’s not going to strike everyone out,” Morford said of his star right-hander. “He’s going to go (to college) somewhere. (He’s) The best I’ve ever coached.”

Winslow’s mostly bored Logger teammates behind him only had to handle the ball five times, counting the hit and a couple of errors.

During three of the seven innings, Winslow struck out the side to make short order of the Rangers who, early on, were looking past this one. Winslow threw just 84 pitches, 65 strikes, 19 balls.

No Ranger ever got past second base.

Offensively, the Loggers’ runs came in bunches, scoring three runs in the second inning and then another pair in the sixth.

Hitting stars for the Loggers were Micah Germany, Banks Stocking and Andrew Haggerty, who each picked up a couple of safeties. Banks and Haggerty also picked up RBIs.

Austin Perez had the unfortunate situation of pitching against Winslow to get tagged for the loss.
