Catch the latest virus: Turner Mountain Fever

It was another great weekend at Turner Mountain. On Saturday, Jan. 12, there were 72 skiers/boarders on the mountain, and the next day there were 76.

Both days saw a few sun breaks and continued temperatures below freezing, allowing for powder on the top half of the mountain to stay nice. With the right layers on, it was easy to stay warm.

The best run of the weekend was Back Side of the Moon. There was still plenty of powder, and at least half a dozen cornices of various sizes through the middle of the run. Turner might not have an official terrain park, but it certainly has some enjoyable natural features if you’re looking to get air.

If you’re more of an intermediate skier/boarder, there are numerous groomed intermediate runs to choose from. From the top of the mountain, you can always count on consistent coverage and grooming on the Boundary Road, Pneumonia Ridge, Elk Basin, or Cabinet Avenue. From Midway, there is Lower Main, Lower Mambo, Pig Chutes I and II and the jeep road. Grooming services have improved significantly this season.

For adults and kids who are just learning, every weekend on Saturday there are two sessions of two-hour long lessons offered in skiing or snowboarding. If you’re interested in taking lessons, it’s a good idea to call Turner coordinators ahead of time to let them know you plan to join the class.

Don’t let Turner’s reputation as a steep hill scare you or your family from coming up here to learn. While we may not have tons of “bunny slopes” we do have plenty of great runs to learn on. The traffic on runs is always light, which is great when you’re learning.

We’re always happy to have new skiers and snowboarders at the mountain. Watch out though – you might catch Turner Fever. Symptoms include constantly checking the weather report, incessant good cheer at the sight of snow and waking up at the break of dawn on the weekends to head to Turner.

See you at the Top Shack.
