By volume, cars kill more than guns: Should we begin an assault on vehicles?
Letter to the Editor,
The Second Amendment of our Constitution says the right to bear arms shall not be infringed, yet every time there is a shooting such as the massacre in Newtown, Conn., the gun-control fanatics instantly appear and begin advocating gun control and the Brady Bill advocates begin chirping like a cuckoo clock.
These people don’t seem to understand that these tragedies are caused by loonies who should be locked up before rather than after their killing sprees.
If the same logic as banning firearms is used, then automobiles should also be banned, because in the U.S. far more deaths are due to automobiles than firearms.
The primary reason for the rights outlined in the Second Amendment is the defense of the people against a tyrannical government.
When we consider the state of our government now vs. what it was when the Bill of Rights were ratified, there is much more reason to preserve the right to bear arms today than back then. Our government has evolved into an enormous monstrosity that is corrupt, inefficient and oppressive. It has assumed powers not given to it by the Constitution and rode roughshod over the rights of its citizens.
When we learn of huge purchases of ammunition by the Department of Homeland Security; drones being used to spy on our own people; assault rifles supplied to Mexican warlords by our government and many other suspicious activities of a government obviously out of control, it is not prudent for us to give up any more of our rights than we already have.
I believe it’s crucial to remember that the job of seizing our assets and confiscating our property will be much easier for the government if they are able to convince us to surrender our firearms.
