Libby, Troy softball come up short
Darkening skies prevented Troy’s softball team from earning a conference win over a solid Eureka team Tuesday night. Instead the second game of the double-header was called off as a 12-12 tie.
A young Lady Trojan team was shocked in the early game, with a lopsided 19-9 loss to the Lady Lions.
Troy Head Coach Brendan Miller said his freshmen still have not totally acclimated to road trips.
“The first game of these trips we don’t have our feet underneath us,” he said. “Our defense was a lot better in the second game. We had half the errors they had.”
The Lady Lions raced off to a 12-2 lead after four innings. Troy closed it to 12-9 with a seven-run fifth inning before Eureka scored eight more runs.
Freshman Hailey Peterson nearly wore out her arm by throwing 170 pitches for Troy. She still lodged 11 strikeouts, but the Lady Lions battled the entire game and Peterson allowed 16 earned runs.
Breanna Opland, Troy’s hard-hitting senior, went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Libby made a surprising effort against an excellent Frenchtown team Tuesday night, falling 6-1 to the Lady Broncs in a game which could have easily been 3-1 were it not for some ill-timed mistakes.
