Three Libby boys go to state

Three Libby boys will head to Anaconda’s Old Works Golf Club for the state tournament this weekend after qualifying in Friday’s divisional tournament at Cabinet View. 

The Loggers finished third-of-five teams and the ladies fifth, knocking Libby out of any automatic team qualifying. The first- and second-place teams got free rides to Anaconda. For any golfers not in the automatic qualifying teams, those who finished in the top-15 overall were invited to state.

“Overall, the course played difficult,” said Libby head coach Dann Rohrer. “Only one player broke into the ‘70s.”

That player, Whitefish’s Art Doorn, shot a fantastic 74, winning the tournament by six strokes.

Libby’s Morgan Wilkins finished first for the Loggers, securing eighth place overall with an 87. Jonny Cielak followed with 91 and ninth place for the Loggers, and Quinn Sullivan was the last Libby athlete to place, shooting an even-100 and finishing 13th overall.

Rohrer wasn’t surprised with the way his boys played, but thought his girls had a rough outing.

“The girls didn’t have a great day,” he said. “They can all play better than they shot. I wish some of them had made it.”

Paige Bothman led the girls with a 123, only three strokes away from punching a ticket to state.

The three Libby boys will travel to Anaconda to play the Jack Nicklaus-designed Old Works on Thursday, when they will have a practice round. The real tournament is Friday and Saturday.
