Joyce Worden, 77, formerly of Libby

Joyce Worden, 77, died at Brendan House in Kalispell on Sept. 7, 2012, from complications after a recent surgery. 

She was born Oct. 27, 1934, in Stillwater, Minn., to Rueben and Alta (Crowther) Scullen. She was one of nine children. 

She attended school in Stillwater and was active in 4-H.  After graduating from high school she married Donald Smith on Sept. 6, 1952.  Her husband’s career in the Army and work at hydroelectric plants moved the family of six to various states such as California, Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon.

In 1967 the Libby Dam project brought the Smith family to the beautiful Cabinet Mountains.  Around 1970, she began a 15-year career as a dental assistant for Dr. Fennessy and Dr. Davidson.  

She became active in the Toast Mistress group and in the Libby bowling leagues.  She served as the bowling league secretary for many years and thoroughly enjoyed the game and more so the time spent with friends at the alley. 

She married George Worden on June 28, 1990, in Libby.  They both loved the Libby area and spent as much time as possible on scenic drives in the mountains and going on hunting outings. 

She is preceded in death by her husband; George: parents; Rueben and Alta: sisters; Clementine Phillips, Bernice Hemenway, Caroline Campbell: brother; Earl Scullen.

Survivors include sisters, Grace Hosch and Palma Jean Pratt; brothers, Myron (Dorothy) Scullen and Warren (Darlene) Scullen; many nieces and nephews; sons, Brad (Lorene) Smith; Dean Smith; Glen (Laurie) Smith; daughter, Brenda Smith; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 29, 2012, at the City of Libby Cemetery.  

There will be a reception at the Ponderosa Room following the service.
