Conference play proves challenging

Libby’s volleyball frustrations continued last week with two conference losses to Whitefish and Polson.

The match against the Lady Bulldogs was especially hard to take for Libby, a team coming off an emotional low in a 3-1 loss to Troy earlier in the week.

The first game’s score spoke for itself as Whitefish dominated 25-6. 

The second and third games were much closer, Libby earning a tight one, 25-23.

But Whitefish proved overpowering again in the fourth game, sending the Lady Loggers home with a 25-11 ousting.

Harley Nelson had five kills and a .308 attack percentage, leading her team as a “bright spot to a gloomy night,” as head coach Cindy Ostrem-Johnston said. 

The Lady Loggers weren’t able to sneak a victory against Polson, as they were swept 3-0; 17-25, 24-26, 22-25.

Libby struggled to close against Polson.

“We corrected better but blew leads,” Ostrem-Johnston said. “Unforced errors at critical times. We need to handle pressure, cut down on errors.”

The losses drop Libby to 1-5 and 1-4 in conference, the lone win being over Frenchtown on Sept. 1.

Libby will attempt to battle back 1 p.m. Saturday at home against Columbia Falls.

Freshman and sophomore volleyball coach Kyle Crawford sent stats for his younger girls.

The froshmore team is 0-5, but has played close matches with Columbia Falls.

Kira Lauer led the Lady Loggers against Whitefish with four aces and five digs.
