Libby splits at Bonners Ferry tourney

Libby volleyball split its games this weekend at the Bonners Ferry tournament, going 2-2 and falling in the first round of elimination play to Stillwater Christian.

The Lady Loggers slipped early in group play, falling apart in the first game against Columbia Falls 14-25, but roared back in the second, 25-19. The Wildkats squeaked out a 16-14 win in the third game to hand Libby an opening loss.

During the tournament the Lady Loggers had a serve percentage of 81 percent, well below what head coach Cindy Ostrem-Johnston would like to see.

Libby beat Couer d’Alene’s junior varsity squad 25-18, 21-25, 15-9 and then bested the hosts, Bonners Ferry, 25-22, 13-25, 15-10.

“We’ve been riding the roller-coaster this season,” said Ostrem-Johnston. “We need to attack and play at a high level consistently.”

All it took was a 14-25 loss to Stillwater Christian to send Libby home.

Libby did have some nice stats, including 33 aces, 10 of which came from sophomore libero Mahalah Wedel. Sophomore middle-hitter Devon Gallagher had 23 of Libby’s 56 kills and sophomore setter Hannah England had 48-of-51 set assists.

Wedel led stats again with digs, finishing with 27 and a 2.03 serve received.

Outside hitters Hailey Craig and Lauren Wepprecht finished with 18 and 14 respectively.
