Honors program offers 'a leg up'

Troy High School Principal Jacob Francom is on a mission. He wants to give his students the most far-reaching opportunities he can, and he’s received quite a bit of help.

This year, Troy has instituted honors classes, has morning tutoring for students who would like help and has academic helping teams meant to catch any students slipping behind.

The Intervention Team, one of these academic teams, will monitor academic development and will assist Troy students in becoming academically independent. 

The other, GEAR UP, is returning for a second year, and will seek to prepare students for life after high school. Whether that means preparation for college or career is up to individual students, but the opportunity will be available for all students. 

“Part of all this is to bring incentives to students,” Francom said. 

Another incentive is the dual enrollment classes being offered by Troy, courtesy of Flathead Valley Community College.

Francom has helped design four of these classes, College Writing, Public Speaking, American History and an EMT class. They will give dual credits in both high school and college for Troy students, giving them a leg up academically.

Troy School District will provide the tuition and textbooks for this college courses.
