Troy gets swept in first game; Libby splits two matches

| September 5, 2012 1:24 PM

Troy volleyball showed it still has much to work on as it was swept by Stillwater Christian School on Friday night 25-16, 27-25, 25-19.

The Cougars were led by a superb defensive effort that rarely lost a sustained volley and numerous kills from Stillwater’s middle blocker Jordan Danz.

“We were caught off-guard by the caliber of play,” said Lady Trojan head coach Sandra Beal. “Stillwater is a powerhouse team, but we were able to maintain and be really scrappy.”

The game was the first of the season for Troy, which returns some talented seniors.

Returning all-conference middle blocker/outside hitter Jordan Williams led Troy with three aces. Holli Higgins, setter, had 19 of her team’s 21 assists while middle blocker Michaela Curry had eight kills to lead Troy. Libero Alanah True-Silva had 12 digs.

But it isn’t just seniors with skills. The junior Lundin twins, Katie and Kellie had a block apiece. The conference picture looks relatively clear for the Lady Trojans.

“It’s anybody’s game this year,” Beal said. “There’s no powerhouse team. I’d love to finish in the top-two in district.”

Libby Volleyball suffered a tough 3-1 loss to Columbia Falls on Thursday, but rebounded with a sweep of Frenchtown, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22.

Hannah England had 35 assists, Lauren Wepprecht and Devon Gallagher had 13 kills each and Libby had 14 aces in the Columbia Falls matchup, and statistically looked better than the Wildcats.

Libero Mahalah Wedel had 14 digs in the Frenchtown game and Taylor Quinn had two blocks.

Libby plays Glacier at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
