Computers spook you? Come to session to chase the demons

| October 2, 2012 1:37 PM

In October, the Troy Branch of Lincoln County Public Libraries will be giving readers the treat of a full calendar of fun, informative, and exciting programs.

All events are free and open to the public.

Are you still living in the 20th century?  It’s time to put aside all fears and finally learn that computers aren’t so scary after all.

Join Troy Library on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 5:30 p.m. for “Not-So-Hard Drive.”

This class is for people who know absolutely nothing about computers.  They will focus on identifying parts of a computer, how to use a mouse (it doesn’t bite), why they sometimes want to double your clicks, and why rebooting has nothing to do with your feet (and, of course, find out what a hard drive is).

All three branches of Lincoln County Libraries will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 6, in observance of Columbus Day.

The Troy Wordsmiths will have two meetings, the first on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 5:30 p.m. and the second on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 5:30 p.m.

Both meetings will be held at the Troy Library.  The group welcomes writers of all ages, but please be advised that the group will not censor anything.

New members are welcome and should contact Stacy at the Troy Library, 295-4040, for more information and to pick up copies of the stories being discussed.

Your library needs you. Join the Troy Friends of the Library at its meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m and learn how you can help support the library.  All are welcome.

On Thursday, Oct. 11, the Troy Library will open a little bit early for Story Time.  Bring your preschooler and join Leeann at 10:45 a.m. for some reading fun.

Do you wake up at the same time every night?  Do you have strange spots on your tongue?  Did you know that Chinese Medicine, which takes the whole body into consideration, uses both of those questions to determine which organs may need support?

Join the library for part two of the three-part Chinese Medicine series by trained Chinese Medicine Herbalist Kelly Needs at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17.

The Troy Library’s Book Discussion Group will meet at 5 p.m Thursday, Oct. 18.   This month they will read The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak.  Set during World War II and narrated by Death, this book tells the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich who steals books.

Liesel learns to read and shares her stolen books with her foster family, neighbors, and friends, including the Jewish man hidden in her basement.  Books are available at the library for 14-day checkout.

Fifty-thousand words in 30 days—that is the challenge of National Novel Writing Month in November.  The Troy and Libby branches of Lincoln County Libraries want to help authors release that novel inside.  There will be numerous events coming in November to support them, but join us for the kick-off on Thursday, Oct. 25th at 6 p.m. at the Hot Club in Troy.  Listen to a local author share his words of wisdom as they begin their novel-writing journey.  Admission to this event is free, but food and drinks will be available for purchase.

The last Friday of every month is Amnesty Day at the Lincoln County Libraries.

In October, Amnesty Day will be Friday, Oct.  26.

Any materials less than 90 days overdue which are returned in good condition to any of the three libraries on that day will have all penalties waived.

Overdue interlibrary loan materials, damaged or lost materials, and previously charged fines are not included.

For more upcoming library events, please view the calendar on the Lincoln County Public Libraries website, www.lincolncountylibraries.com/calendar/Announcements.html, or call the Troy Library, 295-4040.
