Rehberg revises record on taxes, reader contends

Letter to the Editor,

Congressman Rehberg is so out-of-touch with Montana families, he is more interested in protecting tax breaks for millionaires like himself than giving a payroll tax holiday to Montana workers.

While Congress was debating an extension of the payroll tax holiday that Montana Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester supported and voted for one year ago. Rehberg voted against the current tax holiday on December 17, 2010.

Baucus’ and Tester’s 2010 tax cut measure, overwhelmingly supported by Republicans and Democrats, cut taxes for all taxpayers, provided tax credits to small businesses, and significantly protected Montana farms and ranches from the estate tax.

Recently, after nearly a full year after Rehberg voted against tax cuts for middle-class Montanans, Rehberg said this to a Billings TV station:

“I’ve been fighting for a payroll tax holiday for years... to let Montana families keep more of their hard earned money.”

However, Montanans are learning that Rehberg can’t be trusted to look out for Montana families and he can’t be trusted to tell the truth about his record.

“Congressman Dennis Rehberg is so out-of-touch with Montana, he probably believes he’s been fighting for tax cuts for middle-class families,” said Ted Dick, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party. “He’ll tell Montanans whatever they want to hear, as long as it benefits his political career.”

Both Max and Jon plan to support extending the current holiday in the most recent proposal that requires millionaires to pay their fair share.
