Harold Nelson, Jr., 84, of Libby

| June 28, 2012 11:19 AM

Harold M. “Swede” Nelson, Jr., passed away quietly at home with his loving companion, Maria Luiza Ellis by his side.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Mary and his son Richard “Sam” Rayburn. Swede is survived by his son Charles, sister Charlotte Ann, brother Dean, daughter-in-law Evelyn, granddaughters Dawn and Pamela and three great-grandchildren.

Swede was born in Seattle to H.M. and Dorothy Nelson. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and after a brief military career went on to join the Seattle Police Department. He spoke with reverence about this career and felt it to be an honor to help others in need throughout his life.

After retirement from the police force, Swede drove a charter bus for a few years and then he and Mary moved to Okanogan, where they made a very successful venture into motel ownership.

Then, longing for a lifestyle away from the city, Swede and Mary made their way east to Montana, where they finally settled into their log home on Middle Thompson Lake.

Swede was a lover of animals and enjoyed the company of children. His passion for cooking was well known to all that were invited into his home. You never left Swede’s table hungry.

Swede lived a full life that included card games, fishing, snowmobiling, boating and much more. He will be missed greatly by family and friends.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home in Libby.

Interment will be at a later date at Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park in Seattle, Washington.
