The road to the state tournament for junior Danny Leggins went through teammate Jason Schnackenberg in Polson at the Divisional Tournament May 17-19.

Much to everyone’s surprise, including himself, Leggins pulled off the upset and sent Schnackenberg, a sophomore, packing.

“It was the best game I ever played,” Leggins said of the Logger showdown that took place on a private court. “He’s my hitting partner, so I knew how good he was.”

Leggins took fourth in the division and advanced to state in Great Falls where he lost his first two matches to be knocked out of the double-elimination tournament. Despite the early exit, he was in good spirits about the meet, which took place May 25 and 26.

“This is my second year playing tennis, and I only played it for fun,” Leggins said. “I’m still a big baseball guy. That’s my favorite sport.”

Leggins opted out of Legion baseball this year, but had fun playing and improving his skills in tennis.

“He kept telling me, ‘I’m getting better,’ and I thought, yeah ok,” said Danny’s father, Carl Leggins. “But then I saw him play, and I thought to myself, “Wow, he has gotten good!”
