Scores honored during LHS' spring awards ceremony

<p>Logger coach Josh Bean presented Dylan Berget with a certificate recognizing him as the White Star winner for his participation in varsity sports during his four years at Libby High School. Berget won 14 varsity letters during his four years at the school, competing nearly every season and playing football in the fall while running cross-country, too.</p>
Hundreds of students, teachers and parents gathered in Ralph Tate Gymnasium at Libby High on Friday afternoon for spring awards and acknowledgements, with seniors Sawyer Zimmerman, Dylan Berget and Alyssa Walker each claiming several apiece.
Berget and Zimmerman shared one of the awards, the scholarship awarded to a male by Libby’s Booster Club, while Walker picked up the girls booster award.
With 80 letter-winners and 16 Academic All-State athletes, the accolades reached far and wide for the Loggers.
Four softball girls were named to the all-conference team, including Walker – who earned an honorable mention – and team MVP Alexis Hageness, who earned first-team honors. Freshman pitcher Hannah England earned a second team honor while freshman utility Mahalah Wedel notched an honorable mention.
Dan Leggins earned an all-conference nod in men’s tennis for his upset of teammate and team MVP Jason Schnackenberg for a shot at a state seed.
Wayne Baker, a teacher at Libby High, dedicated the assembly to longtime teacher and track and field coach Ed Tabis, who had announced previously his decision to retire from teaching.
That wasn’t the only memorable part of Tabis’ day, as he announced a special award for one of his athletes.
“In 33 years I’ve never seen this happen…I’ve never even heard of this happening.” Tabis said as he gave a bright yellow T-shirt to senior Robin Kyes.
In four years of Logger track and field Kyes had competed at one time or another in 17 separate events on the track and the field.
One of Kyes’ teammates, Berget, won one of his awards for competing in four sports every year. The White Star Award, given to those athletes who earned at least nine varsity letters, seemed to be designed for Berget who played offense and defense on the gridiron Friday night and then hit the trails for cross country the next morning. All totalled, Berget earned 14 letters.
The afternoon award session featured an earlier time, starting at 12:45 p.m. Friday.
