Wounded warriors tackle Rainier after 5-day climb

Camp Patriot, an organization designed to take disabled veterans on outdoor excursions, recently guided a few of these vets up Mt. Rainier last week in a five-day ascent up the mountain.

The veterans stopped at Camp Muir, named after naturalist John Muir before attempting to summit the 14,411-foot high mountain.

The hike to Muir, which takes 3-4 hours for experienced climbers, took 10 for the group Camp Patriot guided.

The two teams summited the mountain last Thursday morning after 7 a.m. and were looking great and in good spirits.

The weather was sunny and warm, which made for a melting hazard, but no problems occured with sliding ice or sudden drops into crevasses.

The teams descended the next day for a barbecue back at base camp, a reward for a job well done.
