Dr. Fred Conkel has been in business for a few months in Libby, but after spending 42 years practicing veterinary medicine in Oregon, he’s still the new guy in the area.

He employs two, including himself, at the Westgate Animal Clinic, located at 368 Westgate Ave., on the left just before you leave the Libby area for Troy.

“I operate an animal clinic in Libby and travel to homes and ranches to give veterinary care to pets, horses and livestock,” Conkel wrote in a business synopsis.

Conkel’s veterinary service specializes in large animals, and he touts that he offers the only large-animal service in Libby.

He travels daily to farms and ranches to treat sick cattle and horses, as well as other large animals.

Regular readers of The Western News may recognize Conkel as a contributor to our Opinion Page, where he relates from his more-than four decades of experience.

Conkel’s 42 years in Oregon mean he has seen animals of many shapes and sizes, and he is ready for what Libby has in store for him.

His funny stories, experience with animals both large and small and friendly demeanor mean that Conkel could be a fixture in the community for years to come.
