Ranger District opens roads Sept. 1 for firewood collection

| August 29, 2012 11:59 AM

In an ongoing effort to meet the firewood needs of the local community, the Libby District plans to make available firewood cutting areas that will be open.

Beginning Sept. 1 and going to Sept. 30, two gated road systems on the Libby Ranger District will be temporarily opened this fall to provide Personal Use Firewood for area residents.

A total of 8.95 miles of road will be open this fall.

The road numbers are 6829, 5253 and 6827 at Cow Creek totaling 7.69 miles and another 1.26 miles of road at 113 East Brush Creek will be opened as well.

Roads 6829, 5253, and 6827 are located approximately 7.25 miles up the Cow Creek drainage (10 miles up the 763 Fisher Road.), a small area on the 6829 road has been identified as Old Growth Forest.

Old Growth stands have been clearly marked in the field with signs where cutting of firewood is prohibited.

Road No. 113E is located up the 113 Brush Creek Road approximately 21 miles up the Wolf Creek Road off to the right.

Forest personnel will patrol the roads during the open season as outlined above.

For the District to maintain this program, full compliance from the public is needed.

Personal Use Forest Service firewood permits are required.  Provisions listed on the back of the Personal Use permits will apply in these areas.

Firewood permits, instructions and maps for these areas are available at Canoe Gulch Ranger Station or the Supervisor’s Office in Libby.

Signs will be posted at road closure devices, indicating the road will be open during the dates listed above.

The above roads could be closed on short notice if moisture conditions develop where damage to the road surface becomes a problem or during periods of extreme fire danger.

Roads could be reopened when conditions change.
