Burnout 1

Cars, trucks, motorcycles and those interesting Rat Rods lined the curbs of Mineral Avenue on Saturday for Ignite the Nites, one of the biggest shows in the Northwest that can only be described as a huge success.

While the 31st annual show fell short of last year’s total of registrants by 44, which was the club’s 50th anniversary, those who were here enjoyed themselves immensely.

“It was a great show, even though we came up a little short of last year,” Short said.

Last year, the Igniters registered 454 cars, and this year there were 430 vehicles, including those belonging to Igniters Club members. Short mentioned a huge car show — the Good Guys — in Spokane that may have competed for participants.

Short explained last year, while more car owners registered to run in the annual Friday night cruise, fewer of those last year actually displayed their cars on Saturday.

“Last year, we had cars parked in the middle of (Mineral Avenue),” Short said. “This year, we got permission from the city to go all the way down to the cul-de-sac.”

Excellent, hot August weather further enticed the crowds, which came from all over the Northwest.

“We always come,” said Dave Steward of the Pharaohs Car Club of Cranbrook, British Columbia. “We’ll be back next year.”

The Pharaohs, with a chapter in Cranbrook and in Washington, brought 21 members to Libby. The club received recognition for having the largest contingent of  members beyond the Igniters.

In all, there were 28 categories that were awarded.

This year’s Peoples’ Choice Award went to Lynn and Susie Main of Spokane Valley for their 1929 Ford Sedan Delivery.

The re-created 1929 classic was rebuilt by the Mains, who admit they have about $200,000 into the car.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” Susie Main said.

The Mains, who say they met at a car show, have used parts from five other vehicles to build their classic.

“It’s got a ’31 cowl to receive a ’33 front end; the top is a 1961 Dodge. It’s got motorcycle headlamps, because they were the right size and the door is from a ’38,” Susie Main said.

The candy-brandy wine-red delivery features ghost flames with an all redone interior.

“We’ve got a lot into it,” Lynn Main said.

Last year’s Peoples’ Choice winner James Morse of Hayden, Idaho, returned with his classic 1950 Mercury and won the custom 1949 to present category.

“This is my third year,” Morse said, “and I’ll be back.”

One vehicle that drew a lot of attention is the beautifully restored 1950 Chevrolet 3100 pickup owned by Dwain and Jessie Smith of Lethridge, Alberta, that won the NTS Award. The Neater Than (Stuff) Award is given to the runner-up to the Peoples’ Choice.

The Smiths’ red with yellow-flamed pickup featured wooden slats in the back with a red-tempered glass pane running down the center of the bed to see the drive-train below.

“We’ve got neon under the bed, too,” Dwain Smith said.

Once again, the event brought thousands to downtown Libby and in the process bolstered the local economy.

“We had someone who estimated the show brings about $270,000 to the local economy,” Short, the Igniters Club president, said. “I guess there’s no way of really knowing, but that’s what’s been calculated.

Mike Munro, the owner of Treasure Mountain Casino, Restaurant and Lounge, said car show patrons doubled his weekend business.

“Yes, it’s my biggest weekend of the year,” Munro said.
