Wayne L. Hartly

Wayne LeRoy Hartly, 82, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010 at his home in Libby.

He was born May 6, 1928 in Boise, Idaho to Dee Rollins and Lelah Lorraine (Hardisty) Hartly. Wayne graduated from high school in Billings. After high school, he was employed by the U.S. Forest Service. During his tenure with the Forest Service, Wayne was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served with occupation forces in Japan under Gen. Douglas MacArthur as a squad leader.

Wayne married Helen Mary Catherine Forhan on Feb. 16, 1952. Together they raised three sons. Wayne became an expert pipefitter welder. He helped build the Anaconda Aluminum complex and several dam projects, including the Hungry Horse and Libby dams. He settled in Libby in 1969 while working on the Libby Dam project. After Libby Dam was completed, he worked in construction projects throughout the Northwest.

Wayne loved attending Libby senior citizens events and dinners and was an avid member of the Northwest Montana Gold Prospector’s Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Nelle) Hartly; parents, Dee Hartly and Lorraine Sanders; and a brother, David Sanders.

Wayne is survived by his sons Raymond Hartly of Elko, Nev.; Russell Hartly of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and James Hartly of Livingston; brother, Carl Sanders of Columbia Falls; sister, Carol Ann Fleihr of Grants Pass, Ore.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home, 422 W. Second St., in Libby. A reception and luncheon will follow at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2056 Highway 2 South in Libby.
