Letter: Nothing false about wildlife population data

| March 18, 2010 12:00 AM

Dear Editor:

In response to Mike Leahy’s comments on the wolf/elk issue (“More comments on wolves, elk issue,” March 12, page 4) … Mr. Leahy, you claim David Allen’s allegations, as you call them, are false and misleading?

Maybe you missed the part where he stated that Rocky Mountain Elk  Foundation population data comes from state wildlife agencies. There is nothing false about the 58-percent decline in the Yellowstone elk herd. As wolf populations grow and expand, so does the decline of deer and elk.

You stated that wolves and elk evolved together and keep each other and their habitat balanced and healthy.

Sounds like you’re looking for a pre-human utopia. Face reality, it’s not going to happen.

You can promote your agenda and your nonsense all you want, but we who live with and put up with excessive wolf numbers know better. Proof of my point … in recent weeks this same newspaper published two articles about Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ decision to reduce the size of two area wolf packs. One of the reasons given – deer numbers in northwestern Montana are low.
