County issues info on fire debris
The Lincoln County Environmental Health Department on Wednesday issued a release asking Libby residents to not disturb plywood plant fire debris. But if any debris must be moved, the county has advice on how to handle it.
As previously reported, the Environmental Protection Agency said no Libby asbestos was in the building at the time of the Feb. 25 blaze.
“We are taking action to evaluate health hazards associated with the fire, including sampling of fire debris throughout the community for the presence of other types of asbestos fibers,” the county’s press release states. “We will release these results as soon as they are available.”
The county is asking residents to not disturb any fire debris that may be found on their property. In addition, residents should avoid tracking any debris into homes or cars.
However, if debris is in an area where it must be removed, the following precautions should be taken:
• Wet the material with a fine mist.
• Wear disposable gloves.
• Place the material in a sealable plastic bag.
• Place the gloves in the bag with the debris.
• Dispose of the bag with garbage.
• Do not take the material or bag into the home.
Erik Leigh, environmental technician, said intermittent effects on air quality have been seen in fire’s aftermath.
“People sensitive to smoke should limit their exposure,” Leigh said. “All people should limit strenuous outdoor activities during periods of elevated smoke levels. Anybody experiencing significant breathing difficulties should consult their physician.”
