Letter: Seeking right to choose MT stations
Dear Editor:
Two years ago, three of us collected signatures from Lincoln County residents upset about the federal law that forces us to get Spokane broadcasters as our “local” stations. All we asked for was the right to choose Montana stations.
I sent the 1,500 names to our congressional delegation: Denny Rehberg, John Tester and Max Baucus. Tester sent me an “I share your concern” letter. I don’t think he does.
Rehberg, according to a staff member, was going to send letters to all 1,500 signers, but I said that sounded like something good for Rehberg, not for us, and I don’t think it ever happened.
Baucus was the most responsive. Several of his staff members talked with me about the problem and for a while they kept me informed.
The Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act of 2004 was supposed to have been “reauthorized” by June 2009, but Congress has been rather busy lately, so it’s been extended until Feb. 28. Unless it’s extended again, there will have to be a vote soon.
We’re watching out-of-state news, weather and sports so the Spokane stations can charge a little more for their commercials. And as Dish TV explained it to me, we’re also paying $5 a month for the privilege. If I don’t pay for “local” service I can’t see ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox.
If that sounds unfair to you, write, call or e-mail Baucus, Rehberg and Tester and tell them so.
Jay Goley
