Boys Basketball: THS boys put up fight at tourney

The season may have ended for the Troy High School boys basketball team last week at the Western B Divisional Tournament but the Trojans did not go down without a fight.
THS opened the tourney last Wednesday with a 48-45 victory in overtime over Deer Lodge. The Trojans then pushed eventual champion Florence hard in the semifinals only to lose, 58-38. Valley Christian held off Troy in an elimination game on Friday, 68-66.
In the tournament opener against Deer Lodge, the Trojans led 14-10 after the first quarter but was limited to just three points during the second. The game was tied, 25-25, by the end of the third and 38-38 at the end of regulation.
The Trojans outscored Deer Lodge, 10-7, in OT.
Brian Hammrich scored 14 points and Ryan Rayson added 13 for the Trojans.
In the semifinals on Thursday, Florence ended up with a 20-point victory but those who watched know it was a closer game than the final margin may indicate.
The game was tied, 25-25, at halftime but the Falcons had the upper hand in the third quarter and took an eight-point lead into the fourth. Troy was still within striking distance but Florence finished strong to end up with the double-digit win.
Trent Cratty led THS scorers with 13 points.
In the elimination game on Friday, the Trojans rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to put themselves in position for a chance at victory against Valley Christian.
Troy led 66-65 when Broc Roberts drew a foul and went to the free-throw line with 15 seconds remaining. Roberts sank both to give the Eagles the lead.
Valley Christian then stole the in-bounds pass, Troy fouled and Andrew Schmautz hit another free-throw to account for the final margin.
Hammrich scored 20 points for the Trojans. Jake Alexander finished with 18, which included four 3-pointers, and Kody Hoffman added 10.
Troy finishes the season with a 12-12 overall record.
