Letter: Keep food pantry right where it is

| February 24, 2010 11:00 PM

Dear Editor:

I was absolutely shocked when I read that the City of Troy has asked the Troy Food Pantry to vacate their location in the city’s offices.

The food pantry is a service that is a vital need in each community especially when our economy is in its current situation. Troy has always been a community that has worked together to help and assist its citizens.

There is such a thing as “community reinvestment.” I don’t think asking the food pantry to move and go to the expense of rent and utilities in another location is what I call reinvesting in our community … nor is a community room.

Surely, the heating and electrical cost to the city is a minor expense compared to other expenses to run the city. In fact, I would like to suggest the city replace the bay door with an insulated door and expand the area the pantry uses to allow more space to adequately store their commodities.

My vote, if asked, is keep the food pantry where it is.
