Editorial: Animal cruelty makes no sense

| February 24, 2010 11:00 PM

Serial killers in the making? Or, just idiots running around at night with nothing better to do?

Whatever the case, the story out of Spokane that three dogs have died after eating meatballs poisoned with strychnine just makes no sense at all. It’s difficult to believe that someone would actually drive around a community and toss poisoned meatballs into the yard of an animal to create a violent death.

It sounds like the lead-in to a movie of the week about someone who goes on to kill 37 people over a 10-year period and is now sitting on death row.

Closer to home, stories exist about people who have been known to shoot dogs. Last year, feral cats outside a shelter in Troy were shot as if it was the thing to do that night. And who could forget the case from a few years back of a black lab puppy that was tortured and killed in the Eureka area.

Keep a close eye on your pets, which for most people are loved members of the family. And if you want to do something to help our less-fortunate furry friends, head out to the Kootenai Pets For Life Spring Rummage Sale on Friday and Saturday.

The event will take place on those two days (5-8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday) at the Ponderosa Room – located on the backside of City Hall. Buy some raffle tickets, find a deal at the rummage sale and help a worthy local cause.
