Carol (Johnson) Spencer, 82, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010.

She was born Dec. 6, 1927, in Harlem, Mont., to Albert and Gladys Johnson. She graduated from Harlem High School and attended Northern Montana College in Havre to earn her teacher’s certificate. She moved to Libby to teach second grade and taught for two years before staying home to raise a family.

She continued to work in the Libby School District for many years as a substitute, teacher’s aide and tutor for gifted and talented students. She and her husband, Ralph, were lifelong supporters of Libby Logger sports and she spent much of her time watching children and grandchildren play.

Family said they will remember her as a strong, independent woman who taught her children the value of hard work and standing up for what is right.

“Carol was dedicated to her family and made many sacrifices on behalf of her children,” family said. “She taught them kindness, patience and charity for others. Carol was an amazing example of Christ-like love who impacted the lives of everyone she met.”

She is survived by her eight children, Mark and wife Cindy Spencer; Scott and wife Gloria Spencer; Gary and wife Joanie Spencer; Randy and wife Geneve Spencer; Shane and wife Patty Spencer; Craig and wife Vicki Spencer; Cynthia and husband Guy Hanson; Lynn and wife Sherri Spencer; 33 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Joyce Law and husband Wes; two brothers, Neal Johnson and wife Madge; and Clare Johnson and wife Betty; sisters-in-law, Faith Spencer, Margaret Johnson, Itha Johnson and Doris Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m., at the Church of Latter-day Saints in Libby (2056 Highway 2 South). Visitation was planned for Tuesday, Feb. 23 from 1-8 p.m., at Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home.
