Girls Soccer: Gilden scores 4 goals in win over Polson
Still perfect.
The Libby High School girls soccer team remained unbeaten on the season by ringing up two more victims last week. The Lady Loggers shutout Bigfork on Thursday, 2-0, and followed up with a 5-1 win over Polson on Saturday.
Libby took over the final 25 minutes to get the victory over the Eagles. The two teams were scoreless through the first half and 15 minutes into the second half. Finally, Libby broke through with a goal by Jaime Gilden on a feed from Anna Valentine.
With five minutes left in the game, Libby put the game out of reach when Valentine found Ashley VanHoose for the team’s second goal.
Audra Poppen continued to shine in goal with four saves. Libby outshot the Eagles, 10-5, and had the advantage on corner kicks, 3-1.
On Saturday, Gilden put in a memorable performance with the hat trick (plus 1). Gilden’s four goals came in the 16th, 46th, 68th and 78th minutes. All four goals came on assists from different players – Kaila Forster, Ashley Shaw, VanHoose and Valentine.
Libby led just 1-0 in the first half. After Gilden scored her second goal, Polson got on the board on a shot by Sarah Devlin. But Libby got the lead back up to two goals only two minutes later on a shot by Valentine. Lindsey Kehn got an assist on the play.
Only one minute later, Gilden got her third goal to ice the victory.
The Loggers dominated offensively with a 26-7 advantage in shots on goal. LHS had a 3-1 edge on corner kicks and the teams combined for 12 fouls.
Libby, now 3-0 in the Northern A and 5-0 overall, heads to Bonners Ferry, Idaho on Thursday. The girls’ game will begin at 6 p.m. (Pacific time). The Lady Loggers will play at rival Whitefish on Saturday with the start time slated for noon.
