Grizzy relocated to Cabinet Mountains
Wildlife officials released a 400-pound female grizzly bear Friday in the Cabinet Mountains.
The bear was relocated after it was captured on Thursday in the Whitefish Range, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks reported. The grizzly was estimated to be 8- to 10-years-old.
“We are very particular about getting a bear in good condition and with no history of conflict with humans,” said Jim Williams, FWP wildlife manager.
The release occurred in the Cabinets south of Troy. Wildlife managers hope the bear will improve the grizzly population in the Cabinet-Yaak ecosystem.
FWP worked with Kootenai National Forest and the Cabinet-Yaak subcommittee of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee on the release.
Tim Manley, FWP grizzly bear management specialist, and Heather Reich, who is associated with the FWP Foundation, captured the bear and fitted her with a special radio-collar for tracking purposes.
