Golf: Libby High hosting own invite on Saturday
The Libby High School golf team will make its lone home appearance of the season on Saturday morning at Cabinet View Country Club.
Schools expected to join the Loggers on the links are Browning, Columbia Falls, Frenchtown, Hamilton, Polson, Ronan and Whitefish. The tournament is scheduled for a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
“It should be a good tournament for the kids,” Libby coach Dann Rohrer said. “The new 9 is really coming into its own. The greens crew has been able to put a lot more time into that course now that we only have 9 holes.”
The original 9 holes closed late this summer because of a cleanup project.
Rohrer said he expects Zach Watson to be in the running for individual honors. Watson has played well so far this young season.
“He and I talked about his goals and one of them is to win this,” Rohrer said. “He’s one of the best in Western A and can play with any of them and beat any of them. He has all of the ability in the world to win this tournament; he just needs to play well.”
Jimmy Mee is the last LHS golfer to win the home tourney.
“There’s real good competition among six, seven boys,” Rohrer said about the rest of the squad. “They’re really getting after it.”
In fact, two boys got their scores into the 70s on Tuesday at a junior varsity tournament at West Glacier. Louis Cielak shot a 78 and Chris Campbell came in with a 79.
“The girls have thrown out some good scores, too,” Rohrer said. “A lot of them are playing well and some kids have made some huge leaps. We’re just building toward divisionals.”
