Two fires were discovered Tuesday on Kootenai National Forest, officials said Wednesday.

The Skyline Fire and the Mount Baldy Fire are holdover fires from lightning storms earlier this month.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, the Skyline Fire was estimated to be about five acres in size and the Mount Baldy Fire was estimated to be about two acres.

Both fires are located on the Three Rivers Ranger District near Troy.

Fire retardant was used on both fires Tuesday to slow their progress. Both fires are currently staffed and initial attack has been successful to date, officials said.

Smoke in the area has been coming from the Lawrence Mountain fire, which continues to be managed under a confine strategy, and is now estimated at 500 acres.

To date, the Kootenai National Forest has had 169 fires that have burned a total of 610 acres.
