John L. Luger

John L. Luger, 84, longtime Libby resident, died Oct. 1, 2009 at his daughter’s residence in Spokane, Wash.

He was born at Linz Oberöfterreich, Austria on Feb. 23, 1925 to John and Maria (Schuller) Luger. He moved to the United States in 1931. Living in Wisconsin, he graduated from high school in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on June 4, 1943 during World War II, he was awarded a Purple Heart and served in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 20, 1945.

He married Phyllis Carpenter in 1947 in Wisconsin. They moved to Libby in 1950. They moved to Missoula so he could attend the University of Montana and study  forestry. He went to work for J. Neils Lumber Co., St. Regis and Champion International. He retired in the late 1980s.

Mr. Luger was a member of the Elk’s and Postmasters, and served on the board of directors for St. John’s Lutheran Hospital. He volunteered as a tutor in math and reading. He enjoyed his granddaughters and great-grandchildren, cherished his many friends, had a special place in his heart for his Labradors and had a deep feeling, respect and interest for native Americans and their beliefs. 

Survivors include his daughter, Stephanie Woodruff and husband Donald of Spokane, Wash.; grandchildren, Brenda Franz and husband Darren of Fairbanks, Alaska; Cassandra Adams and husband Joel of Spokane; Gayle Ray and husband Brian of Kingston, Wash.; brother, Emery Luger and wife Doris of Fond du Lac, Wis.; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. at the City of Libby Cemetery.

At the request of his family, donations maybe made to Wings of Libby, St. Labre Indian School of Ashland and Hospice of Spokane.
